Most teachers are also performers and will have lots of experience playing the guitar in many different situations. If you can't find a good teacher near you, find other players whom you admire and hang out with them. You'll pick up so much just by watching and playing along, which is also why you can learn a lot from guitar videos. Whether they're instructional or live concert videos, you can learn a great deal just from studying players' fingers.
