Hearing Power Chords
To take this exercise to the next step, ask your friend to play a power chord with a root on either the sixth or fifth string. Do the same procedure that you did for the single notes, but this time use power chords instead of single notes. Listen to how high or low you are and where you think you should move. As you get better at this, ask your friend to play a few chords at a time. As you get used to hearing it this way, you'll develop a memory for what you hear.
If you're succeeding at this exercise, especially with multiple chords, move on to real songs. Start cracking away at the songs you've always wanted to learn but can't find in tabs anywhere. Some players find that they can learn only small parts of songs at first, and this is normal. At the beginning stages, you'll be able to accomplish only a little bit each day. In a short time, you will get the song in full.
