Election Motions
There are several motions regarding elections that should be helpful to your group or organization. No one wants to see an entire meeting taken up with elections if it can be helped. If the vote is being taken by ballot and it seems as though everyone has voted, a member can make a motion to close the polls. Because this is a motion that limits the rights of members, it will require a second and a two-thirds vote to adopt. Of course, this motion should not be entertained by the chair if any members are still voting.
What if, for some reason, members arrive a little late and the polls are closed, but they want to vote? Perhaps there is a legitimate reason — maybe they were caught in bad weather or a traffic jam. A member may make a motion to open the polls. This will take just a majority vote to put it into effect (because it doesn't take away members' rights, it gives them rights).
