Draw Another Fan

With the last sequence you worked the reflexes for the large and small intestines, but you aren't finished yet! The receiver might be reporting grumbles and gurgles emanating from the belly and intestinal regions. You may even hear these sounds. This is an affirmation that you are doing a great job, working to relax the recipient.

The Fan's Base

Begin by using the right thumb, and walk down the descending colon reflex, stopping at the sigmoid flexure reflex. At this juncture, let the thumb slip into the slight depression, rotate to move in deeply, hold while pressing, and hook this reflex. The left hand is holding the foot. The right thumb is doing the reflexing; the right fingers are either coiled in a loose fist or resting on the top surface of the foot. Hold on this point for a moment, really pinpointing the reflex. You are going to build another fan; however, this fan will be slightly different from the one on the right foot.

Fanning Out

Look at the area you are working on. Imagine a line drawn from the sigmoid flexure reflex diagonally across the foot up to the inner waistline. The line will come across the inner arch, reaching up to find the beginning of the transverse colon. This will be the first swipe of the fan — when the dancer is holding the fan closed, waiting to proceed.

Return your gaze to the sigmoid flexure reflex and again imagine a line, this time going across just under the first line. Here the fan would begin to open. If you were drawing this, you would continue to return to the flexure reflex and keep drawing lines out until eventually the fan would be completely open, with the open end terminating on the length of the sigmoid colon reflex along the sciatic line.

Thumb walk the reflex now. Begin at the sigmoid flexure reflex with the right thumb, using the left hand as the holding hand. The left hand will be supporting the foot either by holding the toes or with the hand firmly across the center dorsal surface. Press in and rotate on the flexure reflex. Then slowly thumb walk diagonally across the instep toward the beginning of the transverse colon.

Essential

Imagining the sequence before you actually perform the work is always a good practice. Feeling the area of the foot, drawing on paper, or drawing on the foot makes it a natural progression from our imagination. It's much easier to perform if you give yourself the image to work with.

Return to the flexure reflex and repeat this process, following just inside the diagonal line as the thumb moves across the foot. Each time, the thumb returns to the flexure and works diagonally across, reaching the inner edge of the foot as the lines of the fan open. The last line begins with the sigmoid flexure reflex and the thumb walks straight across the sigmoid colon reflex.
