Seeing the Receiver Relax
As a reflexologist, you become aware that each segment of the session provokes a deeper relaxation response. From the moment of arrival, the receiver has begun the process of de-stressing. For some people, just the thought of returning is often enough to activate the relaxation reaction.
As you study this technique, you will learn to pick up cues from the receiver. As the receiver is made comfortable, you allow him or her the right to relax. Often your first words relay the message. For many, the permission to relax and let go is essential.
The next important piece in this process is the introduction of touch. The relaxation techniques facilitate not only relaxation of the feet but also of the body and of the mind. By accessing the nervous system through steady, even touch, the receiver is truly able to relax and trust.
Essential
Trust is essential in this process. The receiver must feel safe and secure from the beginning of the session. The giver establishes an environment of caring through firm, gentle touch. A quiet, clean ambiance is important; a compassionate, genuine treatment is vital.
Moving on from the relaxation segment, you begin to finger walk the toes. Stay focused on the receiver, being aware of the pressure you use as well as the routine. The face of the receiver is easily read; the more relaxed the person becomes, the harder it will be for his eyes to stay open. The color of the skin will respond, beginning to display a healthy glow.
Alpha is a meditative state that is often entered into through deep relaxation. Freedom from stress brings more relaxed breathing; the receiver generally releases deep sighs signaling a tranquil state. Make sure you have a light cover over the person you are working on, as the body temperature does drop.
