Clapping

Clapping is done with an open hand, actually slapping on the entire foot area. Clap the top surface, the bottom, and the sides as well. The top of the foot is gently clapped and then this is repeated on the bottom of the foot. Both hands can “applaud” the foot at the same time, too. At times you may find it is easier to use the palm of the hand, while at other times, the back of the hand is easier.

There are two important considerations with this technique, really with every technique. First, always use a steady even pressure, not a forceful painful energy. Always work within the comfort zone of your receiver. Traditionally, people have steered away from reflexology because of the misnomer that it has to hurt to be effective. This is not true! Any professional practitioner of reflexology will tell you it's not how hard you push; rather, it is working the reflex areas properly that counts.

Second, see how your hands are feeling as you work on the foot. Does using your palm feel awkward? Try the back of the hand in the area that felt uncomfortable to you. When you clap along the side of the foot, rather than use both hands, let one hand provide support. One hand or both may be used, depending on your comfort with administering this technique.

Essential

The wonderful truth of reflexology is that this is a holistic healing art. Within the definitive guidelines is room for growth and creativity. During the relaxation section, you may find you want to do more of a particular style and less of another. Go ahead, experiment, and develop your own pattern.
