Time-Blocking Your Priorities
Start by blocking out your vacations. You don't want to cancel vacation because a big client is coming to town. You need to let that client know that you already have a commitment at that time. You are in control. If the client respects you, this will not be an issue. If the client does not respect you, why would you want to work with him? It may seem strange to block out vacations first, but having something to look forward to will make you more productive. It is often said that more work gets done the two weeks preceding a vacation than at any other time — and it is true. By planning when you are going to be gone, you will make better use of the remaining time.
Next, block out at least one day off per week. You can block out two half days if that is the best you can do. Without rest you will be weakened and not perform at an optimal level. If you are consistent about which day you take off, your clients will get used to it and you will not receive calls that day. Perhaps you start by taking off on Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings. As your business grows, you may decide to take all day Thursday plus Sunday mornings. If you create a pattern that people can depend on, it will not be difficult to take the time off.
Question
I can't afford a vacation yet. Can I plan one later, after a few sales?
If you are just starting in the business the cost of a vacation may not be in your budget — but plan one anyway. Visiting family or going camping, as long as you are not working, is still a vacation.
