Manners for Young Men
There is nothing as nice as seeing a young man with manners. The question is how to make sure your teen is one of them!
Manners mean a lot of different things to different people. For some it is purely about how you behave at the table. Other people define manners as how you interact with others on a daily basis, including the physical etiquette of meeting people, dining, dancing, and the like. How your family defines manners is a personal decision and will be based on your traditions and values.
If you are looking for a fun way to teach your son some manners, there are always etiquette classes. Check your local Yellow Pages for etiquette schools in your area.
By showing your son the behavior you expect, it will become second nature to him. Good manners will also help him appear mature to other adults. This can be a big plus, particularly in the middle of a group of other teen boys.
Let's face it, when you're a teenage boy, there will be slip-ups when it comes to manners. This might include loud and rowdy behavior. Many teens also use vulgar language. You need to decide what is acceptable and what is out of bounds.
Once you decide what the infractions are, you will also have to decide the punishments. There may be different punishments for varying degrees of rudeness. It is completely different to belch at the table than to be rude to a teacher. You should let your son know you expect him to follow the rules of manners both in your home and outside of it.
