Teaching Delayed Gratification

Many times, visual reminders work better than verbal ones. They are like cue cards for your girl and help keep her on track, and they are also a record of the tremendous progress she is making in learning how to behave. Also just as in a play, these cue cards are frequently needed only at the beginning of the performance, or in your case, the beginning stages of managing your child. You will be out of this important part of your parenting job before long.

Delayed Gratification Tools

It is so much easier for your daughter to learn what she needs to if she can see with her own eyes what it is she needs to absorb and how far she has already come. When trying to instill in her the ability to wait for something, she may need a little help. Often a note with a smiley face tucked into her hand works after she has shown increased patience. Or post a calendar on the refrigerator and have her mark off each day that she gets closer to that beach trip she has been begging for. When she can see the proximity of her desired goal, she can see that her waiting without making a fuss is paying off.
