Ask a group of third-grade boys if they will ever drink, smoke, or use drugs, and they will tell you an emphatic “no.” By the time those same boys are in the tenth grade, however, almost all of them will have tried alcohol; most will have been drunk at least once. Study after study repeats the dismal story: Teens — both boys and girls — are using alcohol, marijuana, and other substances regularly. Binge drinking on many college campuses has reached epidemic proportions. Absolute control over your son's choices is impossible, but there are things you can do to help him manage these risky issues.
