Important Reassurances

Don't let the cautions and descriptions in this chapter scare you, because most adopted children grow up to be happy, productive adults without these kinds of problems.

Violence, sexual predation, and self-harming behaviors happen when children are subjected to abuse and neglect during their most helpless time of life. You, and other adoptive parents, who tackle the difficult task of loving and healing a sad, hurting child do more to change what's wrong with our society than any group, institution, or government agency.

When things get tough, turn to professionals and other support systems, including adoptive parents who are a little further down the road, and your family and friends.
