Preparing for Being Away from the House

One reason some parents don't look forward to toilet training their children is because they know they will have to use public restrooms (even ones they would normally avoid), since small children cannot wait as long as adults can.

If you are a parent who doesn't relish the idea of relying on public restrooms, there are a few things you can do to cut down on the likelihood of having to use, say, a gas station toilet. First, make sure your child goes to the bathroom before you leave home. Second, if you're out in a place that you think might have clean bathrooms, take your child to use the toilet there rather than relying on her to tell you when she needs to use it. You might also bring along pull-ups if the car ride is extra long and she doesn't always stay dry when she sleeps. That way, if she falls asleep she'll be more comfortable and you won't have to wake her up.

If you know you're going to be in the car or away from the house for a while, you might also consider bringing the potty seat (with liners) along with you. This way, a clean toilet is always close by. Bring wipes, too, so you can clean your hands and the seat if your child soils it.

As the parent in charge, you need not only to expect accidents to happen but to be prepared for them. Clean underwear for your two-year-old, an extra outfit, and wipes should go with you everywhere until your child is at least three. Keep these in the car just in case.
