Aquariums and Zoos
One of the best things about being a parent is that you, too, get to go to wonderful and educational places like aquariums and zoos and can enjoy them with your one-year-old. If you're heading to an exciting place like this, go early or late in the day. Try to avoid lunchtime and the middle of the day, when these places are the most crowded. Your child will be one of the smaller children, and it will be difficult for him to see exhibits (and run around safely) amid lots of other children.
Fact
At this age, your child may not be able to sit still for the special shows and movies that usually run at museums, aquariums, and zoos. Save your money and take her when she's older. Also, you can assume that your young child will only be interested in what's around her for thirty to sixty minutes.
Bring snacks and a stroller that reclines, if possible, so that your child can nap. This will give you a little more time to walk around and see things on your own. And always remember to bring diapers and wipes (which will help you all keep your hands clean, besides their other uses).
Young children might not always respond positively to the animals in petting zoos. Even small animals, such as goats, can overwhelm a small child, especially if he has food in his hands. Be prepared to let your child keep his distance if he wants. It's better to follow his lead than to force him to “enjoy” the experience.
