Is Your Pug a Shrinking Violet?

It's unusual for a pug not to be a bold and confident people-greeter, but it can happen if a pup isn't well socialized by the breeder. If your pug hides behind your legs when other people or dogs come around, you'll need to help him develop more confidence and trust. Gradually introduce him to new people or animals in carefully controlled situations.

Before you introduce anyone to your wallflower puglet, lay down the following guidelines:

  • Ask the person to remain still and quiet, not petting the dog or making eye contact.

  • Let the pup approach on his own terms, even if it takes a few minutes.

  • Give him plenty of time to sniff and circle the person.

  • When the puppy seems comfortable, the new person can slowly crouch down so she's at dog level.

  • Give her a treat to offer the puppy.

  • If your pug seems more confident after this introductory dance, the new person can slowly reach out to scratch the dog beneath the chin. She should avoid patting the dog on the head; lots of dogs view this as an aggressive move. Have the person continue giving small treats, so your dog learns that meeting people is fun and rewarding. Repeat this pattern every time your pug meets someone new.

Praise your shy pug any time he's willing to approach someone, be petted, or take a treat. Ignore any fearful behavior. Whatever you do, don't make soothing, reassuring noises when he shows fear. This only encourages him to believe that there's something to be afraid of.

Never force your dog to go up to someone he's afraid of. Fearful dogs that feel trapped may bite. Just as bad, your pug will no longer trust you as the person who protects him from scary things.

If your pug is anxious around other dogs, start by introducing him — one at a time — to dogs that you know are very friendly and easygoing. It helps if the other dog is smaller than your dog, so he'll feel less threatened, but that's not always possible with a pug. As his confidence grows, gradually introduce him to bigger dogs, rowdier dogs, and dogs of different breeds.
