Other Internal Parasites

Whipworms, threadworms, and lung flukes can also affect dogs. Whipworms fasten to the walls of the intestines and can cause bloody diarrhea. Dogs with a heavy infestation lose weight and become anemic. Whipworms are difficult to get rid of, and a dog may need two or three treatments before they're eradicated. Certain heartworm preventives also control whipworms.

Threadworms, or strongyloides, as they're technically known, live in the small intestine. They can affect both people and dogs and are most common in humid regions such as the southeastern United States. Most commonly seen in young puppies, they cause watery or bloody diarrhea, which can be fatal to a young dog. Threadworms are diagnosed through a fecal exam and can be treated with a dewormer prescribed by your veterinarian. A follow-up treatment in one month is a good idea.

Lung flukes are flat worms that are hosted by aquatic snails and crawfish. When a dog eats the host, the worm finds a new home in the dog's lung. Lung flukes are a regional parasite, found in the Great Lakes area, the Midwest, and the southern United States. They can be treated with a dewormer prescribed by your veterinarian. Unless your pug lives in a coastal area and is fond of snarfing up these creatures, you probably don't have to worry about them.
