Helping an Older Pug Feel Welcome

The move to a new home is stressful for a dog of any age, but most adjust well given a little time. Treat an older pug the way you would a puppy. Give him attention and playtime, but if he prefers to sit back and observe for a while, that's okay, too. Don't overwhelm him with a lot of new people all at once, but give him plenty of opportunities to do things he enjoys, such as going for walks. This will help him relax.

He may feel a little confused at first in your home. If you know what his previous routine and environment were like, it may help to make things as similar as possible. This means using the same food, the same type of food dishes, and the same type of bedding. Whenever you can, make changes slowly.

Give the dog a place he can call his own, such as a crate or bed. Like a puppy, he should sleep in your bedroom. Even though you're sleeping, the time together will help begin the bonding process.
