Basic Commands
All pugs should know the six magic words: sit, down, come, stay, and walk nice. Start teaching these behaviors the first day you bring your pug pup home. He's more than capable of learning them at eight weeks of age, and early practice will give him a head start in puppy kindergarten. Before you get started, here are a few simple rules for training your pug:
Keep training sessions short — no more than five or ten minutes in length.
Train when you're in a good mood.
Use tone of voice to guide your pug — low and firm for commands; high-pitched and happy for praise.
Train where you won't be interrupted by the kids, television, or phone.
End training before you get frustrated, and always after your pug has done something successfully.
Include the entire family in the training process. Everyone should understand how to give commands to the dog, and your dog should respond to anyone in the family who gives him a command. This also helps ensure that your pug fully understands each command.
