Grooming for the Show Ring

Pugs don't need much work before you walk into the ring with them. A bath is the only thing that's really necessary. Bathe your pug a couple of days before the show. Bathing gives the coat a fluffy feel that many judges don't like, so doing it ahead of time gives the coat a couple of days to regain its proper texture.

Many handlers also trim the whiskers and any stray hairs on the chest or rear legs. This is to give the pug a cleaner look. It's not a must, however. Before you go in the ring, go over your pug's coat with a stiff natural bristle brush. Then rub your hands over the coat to bring out the natural oils. That's all there is to it!

End any grooming procedure or bath with a nice massage and a treat. Clean equipment thoroughly so it's ready to go for the next time. And if you're ever tempted to skip a grooming session, think about how you'd feel (and look and smell) if you didn't bathe, brush your hair and teeth, and wash your face on a regular basis.
