Like other scientists, psychologists prefer experiments that assess the causes of behaviors and other psychological phenomena, and they conduct and publish thousands of these each year. However, experiments aren't always possible. Fortunately, psychologists have various methods that mostly rely either on observation or on self-reports of people's thoughts and feelings. Where necessary, psychologists also conduct experiments with laboratory animals.
