Local Involvement

The final way to expose yourself to project management training as well as the community of project managers is to get involved locally. As discussed earlier, there are many local chapters and special-interest groups that are affiliated with PMI. Many of these chapters have monthly meetings and activities to advance the profession of project management. They also allow guests to attend so that they can experience the local meeting before officially joining the chapter. It is a great way to meet other project managers and to get some education as well. Also, many of the chapters have a mentoring program that will allow you to work with a more experienced project manager and have them take you under their wing.

Many new project managers also tend to struggle with amassing experience in the field. They want to be project managers, but everyone wants to hire somebody with experience. To obtain that experience, look to your local United Way or any other charity or church. They are always looking for volunteers and event managers to assist with a fundraiser, local event, or any number of activities. Talk with them and explain that you are a project manager that wants to build some experience. They will be more than happy to assist you in finding a project that you can run, gaining experience for yourself and helping your community as well.
