How to Begin
With all missing persons, search for persons cases, or any other general investigation, you must take certain steps at the outset. These steps involve paperwork and analysis; they may seem tedious, but they are absolutely necessary for obtaining the swiftest and best possible outcome. In fact, a preliminary analysis, or subject profile, will aid in all types of investigations.
Create a Profile and Determine Motivation
Creating a profile of the skip, while time-consuming, will save you a great deal of time in the long run. With the profile in front of you, you'll be unlikely to forget a crucial piece of information. Your client is the first source of information, but you'll find that the subject's friends, associates, and coworkers can often provide information of which the client is ignorant or has incorrect or incomplete knowledge. Prepare a form or a computer template and include all the information necessary to create a profile of the skip. Include the following:

A missing person's motivation is often obvious, such as the avoidance of alimony or child support, but in the case of the legendary guy who goes out for a loaf of bread and never returns, motivation is crucial in locating him. Your profile may illuminate motive, should any logical motive exist. For example, if you discover that the skip was a heavy gambler, it may lead to information proving he owed the local leg-breakers an exorbitant amount of cash. That's your motivation. However, there will be times when motivation won't be available to you.
Former personal and employment addresses may lead you to people who have information about the skip, and places or people to whom the skip may return. The profile is your map, but it's only the beginning. Use all possible leads.
When digging into information databases you may find that the skip has purchased property in names other than his own — perhaps aliases, children, pets, family names, or even names of hobbies or interests. If you don't know these names, you can miss what's right in front of you. Get all information at the outset — even if it seems trivial.
Knowing that your skip receives a worker's comp or SSI check at certain times of the month can help you stake out mail drops in the area to which you've traced him. Mail drops are services which provide an address for individuals to receive mail. Some offer forwarding services, but for an extra charge (in most cases). Therefore, your skip may show up to claim his mail if he hasn't purchased forwarding.
In this case, all you need to do after you narrow your search is stake out these mail drops until your skip arrives. However, if he uses forwarding services, which are more and more available, you'll not find him at the drop. Some service personnel will provide an investigator with the skip's forwarding address, but don't count on it. In this case, you'll have to find another way. The following list contains some examples of mail drops:
UPS Stores —
MailLink Plus allows you to access mail online —
Home Sweet Home e-mails mail to customers —
The Mailbox Works —
Earthclass Mail allows you to access mail online —
Directories that offer global mail drop information are also available. Maildrop-Directory claims to list all mail drops in the United States and around the world.
Maildrop-Directory,
Global Virtual Offices,
Servcorp,
Many of these drops offer other business services as well. Use of a mail drop in itself is not an indicator of wrongdoing or hiding, as many legitimate businesses employ them. However, drops provide a powerful cover for the illegitimate user. The relatively new service of scanning mail and either leaving it on a server for viewing or e-mailing it to the recipient has provided even more layers of cover for those who wish to hide.
Remember that skips use mail drops for receiving packages as well as regular mail. If she doesn't have forwarding, she'll eventually pick up any packages delivered. Investigators have developed relationships with clerks who've agreed to call when such has been received, so the drop can be staked out until the target arrives. The staff may even aid in sending a package to her. To prevent the clerk from violating laws and procedure by giving up the target's box number, you can bring a package to the drop and ask that it be delivered to the appropriate recipient — then wait until she shows up. For obvious reasons, this is a touchy situation, so be careful if you use this ruse.
