Investigators are not born with “the right stuff,” though television and movies make this appear to be true. Investigative strengths are often spoken of as if they're genetically bestowed traits: Either you have them or you don't. In reality, nothing could be farther from the truth; these strengths are not present in one person's DNA and absent from the DNA of another. While it is true that some people may be better at certain things than others, everything can be learned, and everything learned can be improved upon.
