Abuse often has nothing to do with the reason someone is missing, but in some cases it's a direct factor. Also, because many missing children are abused by their abductors or leave home because of abuse, these categories are discussed together. Any abuse is reprehensible, but child and elder abuse are especially repugnant. These populations are vulnerable targets and must be protected by those responsible for their care.
