Baby This Month

At ten to twelve inches long and around one pound in weight, your baby is about the size of a regulation NFL football. How appropriate, considering you've reached the halftime of pregnancy.

Your little linebacker is starting to bulk up a bit as she accumulates deposits of brown fat under her skin. This insulation will help regulate her body temperature in the outside world. She's using her bulk to make her presence known; and if you weren't feeling her last month you likely are now. A look at her through ultrasound might reveal a wave of her clenched hands, which open and close freely now and have their own unique fingerprints.

The fetus is now covered in an oily white substance known as vernix caseosa, a sort of full-body fetal Chapstick that keeps her fluid-soaked skin from peeling and protects against infection. Some of the vernix will remain on the baby at birth, particularly in the skin folds (more if she is early, less if she is post-term).

You and your baby halfway to the end zone.
