Weight Loss

Losing your pregnancy weight is probably something on your mind after you give birth. When you give birth, you will lose approximately ten pounds and look as if you are about six months pregnant. Weight loss is a gradual process and should be taken slowly. Your goal should be to lose no more than one or two pounds per week, with about a half a pound a week being a reasonable goal. It can take years to lose pregnancy weight.

The most important thing you can do about losing weight after you have a baby is to be realistic. Weight loss by itself is difficult, but it is even more difficult when you are caring for a baby. Eating a healthy diet should be your primary concern. You won't have the energy motherhood requires if you aren't getting enough nutrients. Exercise is key in weight loss, and though you may find you simply can't exercise as much or in the same way that you used to, any kind of exercise you can fit into your life will be good for you.

Use the post-pregnancy weight loss calculator at Babycenter.com (www .babycenter.com/calculators/postpartumweight) to calculate exactly how many calories you should eat per day to lose weight after having a baby. The calculator is personalized based on height, weight, activity level, and whether you are breastfeeding.

It took nine months to gain your pregnancy weight, and it is not reasonable to expect to lose it in a short period of time. Pregnancy changes your body. After you have your baby, you may desperately want your old body back, but it is something that can't happen in a healthy way overnight.
