  3. Introduction

A lot is made of “older” women getting pregnant and having babies. Women start worrying about their biological clock ticking even in their twenties and women over 35 are trained to think that they can't have a normal pregnancy. However, today's over-35 woman has an excellent chance of conceiving, having a healthy pregnancy, and delivering a perfect baby.

More and more women are starting or adding to their families after age 35, so much so that this threshold has become less of a serious concern for doctors and has instead simply become one of the many pieces of a medical history that a woman brings with her to pregnancy.

An over-35 pregnancy is not constantly under the microscope. Your health-care provider will probably tell you that you will most likely have a boring, regular pregnancy, with the exciting result of a beautiful baby. While there are things the over-35 woman needs to be educated and aware of, this does not mean you need to be worried or nervous. Your body can handle the work of creating a baby on its own. In the meantime, there are many decisions you can focus on, such as child care, arranging your career to accommodate a baby, preparing financially, and ways to commemorate your pregnancy.

The Everything® Guide to Pregnancy Over 35 is designed to answer your questions and concerns about all of the issues and concern that may accompany an over-35 pregnancy. This book is also your guide to the lifestyle changes your pregnancy may bring, which are significantly different than those that younger women may face. Whether this is your first baby or an addition to your family, pregnancy is a time of great change. Not only are you growing a person inside you (how amazing is that?), you're also finding a way to adjust your career, relationship, home, responsibilities, and activities to accommodate the changes to your body and the changes that will soon be happening to your life.

Your pregnancy should be a partnership with your trusted health-care provider, but when it comes to the bottom line, it's your body, and you are the one who needs to be informed and make decisions. This book will help you do that with the confidence that your pregnancy will be a happy and wonderful time for you and your baby.
