Bad Weather Alternatives
When you are in a routine, it is not a lot of fun to have to set that aside simply because of inclement weather. The good thing about walking is that you do not have to be outdoors to do it.
Mall Walking
If you live near a mall, there are probably a good number of walkers who frequent the mall. Many malls offer special hours to mall walkers, usually prior to the opening of the stores. Sometimes it's even after the stores close. Many mall walkers prefer to go before the crowds arrive.
You can simply call the mall offices to ask about mall walking rules and hours. They can also give you an idea of the distances and courses in the mall. Most of the time, they have already been mapped out for you. Some malls even offer special discounts to their walkers. So even if you don't use the mall often, there may be some perks for you to sign up as a mall walker.
Essential
Having a backup plan for the days it is too hot, too cold, or simply yucky outside can save you the headache of coming up with a last-minute idea of where to walk. Look around your neighborhood and see where other walkers go during inclement weather. Follow the masses!
The benefits of mall walking are usually that it is free, convenient, and safe. Many malls have security guards located on premises 24 hours a day. The parking lots are well lit if you use their facilities after-hours or during hours when it may be dark and deserted. Another benefit is that you're not walking alone.
Even if you don't set out to walk with a group, many people who start walking at the mall often find they fall into a group quite easily. The mall is also a great place to walk with a new baby, because of the constant temperature.
Fitness Facilities
Fitness clubs or facilities are also another place where you can walk should the weather or timing be a problem for your walking. Many have tracks around the center that are mapped out for you, mileage wise. You may have to share this track with some joggers.
Alert
Be sure to ask about the hours of operation, the fees involved, and the commitments. Some facilities will even let you have a trial membership to see if their services are what you need. However, you should be very careful before signing anything. Read the fine print first!
Benefits to the use of a fitness facility or gym include locker rooms and showers, appropriate flooring, access to mentors or personal trainers, and many others. Unfortunately, many facilities charge you for these extra features. This cost is usually charged whether you use their gym or not.
If you like having the added facility and do not mind the extra cost, this might be the right option for you. You would definitely have other benefits besides simply the walking track, including other classes, meeting other members, and added options for exercise.
Treadmills
Essential
If you choose to walk outside in inclement weather, be sure to take necessary precautions. You will want to wear bright, reflective clothing, and carry a cell phone in case you need to be picked up. Also bring along an umbrella or other protective gear for your walk. Remember that cars can't see you very well in poor lighting conditions or bad weather, so be wise when you walk.
So it is raining outside and you can't walk. You don't have the option of a mall or fitness facility. What is left for you to do? Some women choose to purchase a treadmill for general use or for use on days when it is rainy. This can be a great option. Although there is a cost commitment, it is yours forever, unlike a gym membership. You can also share its use with your spouse or others in your home.
Stairs
Say a treadmill isn't for you? Consider using your stairs. This can actually be a great workout. Remember to watch your balance and your levels of exertion. Just because you are not at the gym or outside, doesn't mean you can't overdo it.
