Belly Bands
Belly bands or supports are used for a variety of reasons, many of which do not relate directly to exercising. These bands are designed to support your growing abdomen and to allow you more freedom of movement.
They come in a variety of shapes and fashions. Some are simply Velcro enclosures that go around your lower back and secure at your pubic bone. This provides support to your lower back and pubic bone by helping to “hold” your baby up.
There are more complex models that have lower back to pubic bone enclosures, but also encompass the upper body to help alleviate strain and pressure on the shoulders. These also help to remind you of proper posture. Many of these devices can help alleviate some pregnancy related discomforts, though they should not been seen as a replacement for proper exercise and muscle tone. Use them as a support system, not a replacement.
While you do not need a prescription for these items, obtaining one from your doctor or midwife might encourage your insurance company to pay for one. The more complex models can cost about $100. They can be obtained in medical supply stores, some maternity shops, and even online.
If you are expecting a child other than your first, or if you are expecting multiple babies like twins or triplets, these belly bands are great ideas because of the added pressure and distention of your abdominal walls. Talk to your practitioner about using one if you believe it would help you be more comfortable in pregnancy.
