Special Programs for Moms and Babies
Sometimes there aren't many other options for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you do not know any other moms or do not trust the ones you do know. There are alternatives to using co-ops and friends to help you with child care while you exercise.
Some gyms have child care available on the premises. Check out these options when searching for the right gym. Ask questions about the facilities for children:
At what age do you accept infants?
Are the child care fees included in your membership payments?
Do you need to schedule a time to work out or are you able to drop your child off?
What is the sick child policy?
Is there a time limit for your child?
Is there a limit to the number of days or hours you can use each week?
What is the student/child ratio?
Are there multiple age groups in one class?
Is there a space to nurse your baby?
Are the workers trainer in CPR and other safety measures?
Does the facility meet the basic state requirements to operate? (Look for certificate.)
Essential
About.com Child Care recommends that a facility have no more than three infants per adult. The ratio for toddlers should be one adult for every five toddlers. Although the ratios will go up as the children become older, having other age groups mixed in with younger children does complicate matters.
Tour the child care facility to see if it feels warm and friendly to you. How do the staff workers relate to the kids? Try to talk to other parents who use the facility. This will give you an idea of how other parents feel about the care their child is getting and may serve to set your mind at ease.
One of the nice things about many on-site child care centers is that you are right there in the facility if you are needed for some reason. This may be the deciding factor in which workout facility you choose. It is also nice to have a facility that caters to the whole family and removes as many barriers as possible. You might even look ahead to see what they offer in the way of classes for younger children. Many gyms and fitness centers are expanding to include the entire family.
