Am I Balding?
Sometime around the third or fourth month postpartum, some women notice that their hair — which may have become quite thick and full during pregnancy — starts to fall out at a faster-than-normal rate. The natural shift in hormones that happens around this time triggers the hair to go from a growth phase, which it's in all during pregnancy, to a shedding phase. A normal, nonpregnant, nonpostpartum woman loses about 100 hairs a day, but a postpartum woman might lose three or four times that much. You might notice it everywhere — on your clothes, in your hairbrush, clogging up the shower drain. You may even notice some thinning near your temples and the front of your hairline. Don't worry — most of the time this hair loss is completely normal and will let up before you find yourself shopping for hairpieces.
Make an appointment to get a haircut sometime around the third or fourth month postpartum. You might be starting to feel frumpy if you haven't had your hair done since before the baby was born, and the haircut will be a nice pick-me-up. Plus, you can discuss any changes to your hair's texture or volume with your stylist, and she can recommend cuts and styles that will work best with your new hair and new lifestyle.
