Questions to Expect the Breeder to Ask You

The interview with the potential breeder is a two-way street. A reputable breeder will ask you a great number of questions in an effort to make sure you're a suitable owner for one of his puppies. A responsible breeder always screens buyers very carefully.

When you call potential breeders with your questions, expect to be asked questions such as these:

  • Why do you want a [fill in the variety] poodle?

  • Do you work outside the home, or will you be home during the day?

  • Who will be the primary caregiver for the poodle?

  • How will the poodle be exercised?

  • Do you own your home?

  • Do you have a fenced yard?

  • Do you have children?

  • Have you had a dog before? If so, what happened to him?

  • What is the name and phone number of your veterinarian?

Don't be offended if the breeder grills you. In fact, you should welcome these questions, as they're an indication that the breeder really cares where his puppies are placed. If the breeder doesn't ask you any questions about yourself, be wary. That breeder is probably breeding just to make money.

Fact

The questions the breeder asks potential buyers (and the answers he receives) not only help him screen buyers to make sure they'll provide good homes, but they also help the breeder match the puppies in the litters to the most appropriate families.
