Questions to Ask the Breeder

When you start your search for a breeder, be prepared with a list of questions that will help you screen the breeder and convince you that this breeder is indeed reputable. Such questions should include the following:

  • How long have you been involved with the breed?

  • How did you become interested in poodles?

  • How many litters do you breed in a year?

  • Do you breed any other breeds?

  • How old are the puppy's parents?

  • May I come take a look at your kennel?

  • What are the health problems in poodles?

  • What health clearances do your dogs have?

  • What health guarantees do you provide?

  • Are there any negative aspects to owning a poodle?

If the breeder says that he breeds more than a couple of breeds, that's a big red flag (though breeding different varieties or colors of poodles isn't necessarily a problem). Remember, you're looking for an expert on poodles, not someone with a general knowledge of many kinds of dogs. Also bear in mind that a reputable breeder doesn't breed females before the age of two — and waits to breed until both parents are old enough to have all health clearances.

If the breeder won't allow you to come out to his facility, but suggests that he bring a puppy to you or that you meet in a neutral place, that's another red flag. You want to buy a puppy from a breeder who is proud to show you his entire kennel, so that you can judge for yourself its cleanliness and how he takes care of his dogs.

You should know before asking what the health problems in poodles are, so that you can judge whether the breeder is being completely honest with you.
