Finding a Reputable Poodle Breeder

A good place to start in your search for a breeder is the PCA's Web site. Another way to look (and learn a lot about poodles while you're at it) is to subscribe to one of the poodle Internet mailing lists, like the Poodle Support Group or Poodle-L. These groups are populated by breeders and pet owners alike. You can post an inquiry about breeders and can also read about and become acquainted with breeders you may be interested in buying a poodle from.

Puppies learn important lessons from their mother and littermates, so most reputable breeders wait until the puppies are at least 8 weeks old before sending them to their new homes.

The Internet can be a valuable resource to get you started, but remember, just because a breeder is a member of the PCA, writes well on an Internet mailing list, or has a fancy Web site, it doesn't mean that he is necessarily reputable. You should check out the breeder thoroughly, just as you'd check out a breeder found through any other source.

Probably the best way to meet a group of breeders, and see some of their dogs, is to go to a dog show. Breeders will be happy to chat with you — but only after they've had their turn in the ring. Before that, they're busy grooming their poodles and getting ready to show. Puppies are not sold at dog shows, so come ready to learn, not to buy.
