Which Variety of Poodle Is Right for You?
You can be a big-dog lover or a tiny-dog lover and still find a poodle that is just right for you. In fact, many people have more than one poodle variety in their family. While all three varieties are considered the same breed, there are certain differences to take into consideration in deciding whether you want a Toy, Miniature, or Standard Poodle.
Toy Poodles
Toys are poodles that are 10 inches or less at the shoulder. They typically weigh between 6 and 9 pounds, sometimes even less. These little guys are true lap dogs. Some fanciers say that the Toy variety is the clingiest of the three. If you'd like a sweet dog you can scoop up and carry around when you feel like it, one that makes himself comfortable on your lap, and one that travels easily, the Toy might be for you.
Fact
As tempting as it might be to carry around your Toy Poodle all the time, you need to let her be a dog and walk on her own four feet. It's the poodles that get carried everywhere that give the breed the reputation of being spoiled. Let your Toy be the canine that she is.
It's easier to exercise a Toy Poodle than it is a Miniature or Standard. You can play fetch in even a small yard and wear a Toy Poodle out. You can even throw a ball down the hall of your house for some major exercise.
Toys have the advantage over Miniatures and even more so over Standards in terms of being less expensive to keep. They do require veterinary care and grooming, of course, but their small stature means those services are usually less expensive. And, of course, they eat less.
Miniature Poodles
Miniature Poodles are between 10 and 15 inches at the shoulder and weigh approximately 12 to 20 pounds. These poodles are just right for those who find the Toys too small and the Standards too large.
They're hardy and athletic enough to play with kids and small enough to pick up when you need to. A smallish Mini can even fit under the seat in front of you if you choose to take him on an airplane. Their grooming is less expensive (and easier, if you do it at home) than a Standard's. They also tend to have fewer genetic health problems than Standards or Toys.
Standard Poodles
A poodle simply has to be over 15 inches at the shoulder to be considered a Standard Poodle, but most are much larger than that. Female Standard Poodles typically stand 22 to 25 inches at the shoulder, and males are usually 24 to 27 inches. Standards can range in weight from about 40 to 70 pounds (or even bigger), so they are ideal for those who prefer living with large dogs.
If you're looking for a jogging companion or a dog whose mere appearance can keep strangers at bay, the Standard might be the variety for you. Imagine having a poodle tall enough to stand on his hind legs and give you a big hug around your waist or shoulders!
However, it can take a little effort on your part to give a Standard Poodle the exercise he requires. Whereas a Toy Poodle can wear himself out running around the house, a Standard will need daily walks, games of fetch, or other focused activities. It's not enough to just leave your poodle out in your fenced yard and expect him to exercise himself, no matter how large your yard may be. Standards also eat more than their smaller counterparts, and professional grooming costs more. Be sure you're willing to provide for the extra needs of a Standard before making a final decision to get one.
