Most people usually think of pirates as gruff, smelly seamen who stomp about screaming “Arrgh” while sporting a fancy hat, gold earrings, an eyepatch, a pegleg, and a parrot on their shoulder. While some of these stereotypes may be true, the majority of pirates were dressed and used vernacular more like the merchant and naval seafarers of their day. Like many historical figures, pirates suffer a romanticized stereotype of themselves, from their scruffy beards to their spyglasses to the alleged treasure maps they prized where the inevitable “X” marked the spot.
