For as long as piracy has existed, so too have myths and legends about various pirates and their adventurous and often outrageous behavior. The exploits of a pirate often seem larger than life — some of them wiping out dozens of men in a single swordfight, others burying secret piles of booty that are still sought today. Many well-known pirates became famous long after their deaths, and in some cases — like steamboat terrorist Gunpowder Gertie, husband and wife pirates Eric and Maria Cobham, Captain Kidd, and the infamous Half-Arse — their legends continue to grow.
