Since the 1980s it has unfortunately been on the rise, with modern-day pirates continuing the practices established by their historic brethren. Vessels ranging in size from smaller fishing boats to yachts to oil tankers have fallen victim to contemporary pirates who have the advantages of technology and dangerous weaponry. In general, contemporary pirates tend to prey on unstable waters and ports where corruption and disorganization breed contempt for laws and law enforcement.
