Finding the Right Teacher
Although book study is a great way to get started learning the piano, there is no substitute for the value that a private piano teacher can provide. Playing the piano is a subtle and complex procedure that is impossible to fully describe by the written word. What would take pages upon pages of detailed written instructions can often be accomplished by a simple word or two spoken at the appropriate moment. A two-dimensional picture in a book is no replacement for a visual demonstration by a teacher of how to hold your hands, or the thumb-under technique. The efficiency of your learning will increase exponentially with a good piano instructor. Books make great reference materials, and can deepen your musical understanding, but they cannot say, “Excellent dynamics in the melody there, but you played that one note just a little too short. Let's try again.” Only a teacher can give the feedback that will encourage you and help you improve.
