Exhibits and Shows

Many museums regularly include photography offerings as part of their exhibit schedules. Some also have standing photography exhibits featuring images that are part of their permanent collections. Here are a few other public places where you'll find photography on display:

  • Art galleries

  • Restaurants and cafés

  • County and state fairs

  • Community centers, especially those that offer community education programs

  • Libraries and public buildings

  • FIGURE 20-1 The opportunity to show your work is one you should never pass up. Commercial establishments, restaurants, and coffee shops are often open to letting local artists hang their work, as long as it looks professional.

    Taking Classes

Every photographer, regardless of status or experience level, can benefit from taking classes and master workshops. Some might offer a rehash of what you already know, while others will open up new worlds to you. Sometimes it will seem that you have very far to go, but a week later you may find yourself solving a problem with a technique that you wouldn't have known about if you hadn't taken the class.

If you're thinking about pursuing a career in photography, you may want to attend an accredited photography school or a college or university that grants degrees in photography. Some art institutes and museums also offer degree programs.

Investing time in learning can be fun and challenging. You'll be exposed to techniques, philosophies, aesthetics, and business practices. You'll meet people who have the same camera, the same problems, and the same enthusiasm that you do. Whether you attend a hands-on workshop, a week of lectures and field trips, or an evening slide show, you will enrich your photographic world.

Photography classes are regularly offered as part of college or university extension courses, adult education, local art associations, and community education programs. Other sponsors include local photography clubs, stores, and even equipment manufacturers. Aim for at least one class or workshop a year, and fit in more if you can afford the time and money.

    Joining a Club

Just about every city or town has at least one photography club. Even if you're not much of a joiner, these clubs are great ways to learn more about camera techniques and equipment from other photographers. They can also be a good way to get your work shown, as many of them sponsor exhibits and competitions on a regular basis.
