Essential Images
Whether you're taking pictures for fun or you've been asked to do so, there are some images that are expected, reasonable, or essential. If you think of the different types of images that comprise event photography, you'll avoid getting in a rut or missing something important.
A complete collection of event photos should include the following:
Scene setters: Images that tell the viewer what the special event is.
Illustrative: Images about the event that evoke a feeling or mood.
Traditional: Portraits, from close up to full length, plus group shots and maybe a few staged moments between certain people.
Expected moments: The traditional activities or parts of a special event.
Unexpected moments: Unstaged, unplanned, intimate, or emotional exchanges that naturally take place.
Creative: The unusual angle, the odd juxtaposition of subjects, the single shaft of light, a powerful piece of architecture. Use these to create photographs that are about the day but offer a new way of seeing it.
