Mankind assumed that he, second to God, was the center of the universe. Earth was the center of it all, and the sun and all celestial bodies revolved around it. The Aristotelian view held that the heavens were immutable, or absolute, and the moon, other planets, and stars were smooth, pristine orbs. This view was the one adopted by the Catholic Church.
