When the Roman Empire fell in A.D. 476, the subsequent Dark Ages were not a time when philosophy thrived. To say that life was nasty, brutish, and short would be an understatement. Rome was Christianized in A. D. 313, and the giant shadow of this new and fast-growing faith loomed ominously over independent thinkers.
