Other Fun Ways to Live a Fabulously Frugal Life
Vintage clothing stores hold treasures at very affordable prices. Ditto for consignment stores. Flea markets are another way to shop without spending much, or better yet, nothing at all. In fact, why don't you pare down your household by selling your superfluous possessions? Auctions are also fun, but only when you're shopping for affordable treasures — old picture frames, a silver cake knife, a rhinestone broach, or a vintage hat — or using it as a learning experience. Remember, no matter where you shop, there's nothing wrong — and everything right — with just looking.
Visit local museums. Most museums have a free day every month, and many have discounted prices during off-peak hours. Museums are a great way to entertain the entire family.
Pretend you are a tourist in your own town. Check your local paper or go to your local library or bookstore and read through travel books for your area. Ask the kids to find three places that they'd like to check out, and select two or three of your own. Look for quirky places, like a local cupcake factory, or a train museum, or a famous hot dog stand. Take turns picking which one you visit, and take along a picnic basket. It's fun, it's cheap, and it's educational.

Viva la musica! Exotic music takes you out of your real life world and into imagination. Leaf through travel books or magazines and fantasize, and expand your horizons. For inspiration, try Brazilian, African, Cuban, Indian, Turkish, Irish, French, or Russian, whatever works.
