Insurance Costs
The medical expenses of a special need do not disappear when the child becomes an adult. The initial costs incurred when the child's disability was discovered (initial evaluations, corrective surgeries, and therapies) may lessen with time.
An aging body seems to undo some childhood surgeries. The typical effects of aging can also impact the child's illness or condition. It is crucial that your adult child have adequate health insurance over her lifetime.
Private Health Insurance
If your adult child is working, she may have health insurance through her place of employment. She may be eligible to remain on your health insurance as a dependent disabled adult. Medicaid, a government insurance program for low-income families and individuals, may be another option.
Adults with a disability may qualify for additional government-sponsored medical care programs (separate from Medicaid). Among other things, the severity of the disability and the income of the applicant will be reviewed. The recipient may be responsible for the initial cost of some medical expenses. Search “medical insurance disabled adult” and the name of your state.
Health insurance is a critical, ongoing need for the adult with special needs. Insurance services and options can be confusing, but it is important to understand your child's choices and to assist her in getting a health care program to meet her needs.
