Consider Interests
Your child may have ability in areas that are not of high interest to him. Extracurricular activities are pastimes and should be enjoyable. They are not schoolwork or jobs. Talk with your child about his interests. For example:
Athletics: Athletics is an area where many children with special needs excel; their learning disability may only impact schoolwork. In many cases, the athletic ability of the child will shine given the opportunity.
Art and Music: Is your child interested in the arts? Music is an area of enjoyment for many children. In fact, music is used to teach everything from math facts to the names of the states and capitals. Music seems to go beyond barriers.
Community Service: Some children and teens are drawn to community service; they want to be involved in helping others. School clubs and community groups organize activities that range from food drives to picking up litter in the park.
