Levinson Medical Center

Dr. Harold Levinson is the author of several books about dyslexia, including Smart But Feeling Dumb and The Upside-Down Kids. Dr. Levinson believes that dyslexia stems from a disturbance in the inner ear, which is critical for maintaining balance; he theorizes that this disturbance causes the brain to receive scrambled signals, which in turn produces the symptoms commonly associated with dyslexia. Dr. Levinson treats patients with a combination of medications, using a combination of anti-motion sickness antihistamines and medications commonly used to regulate attention, such as Ritalin.

Although Dr. Levinson has published a number of books describing his approach, his theories are unorthodox and have not been accepted by other medical professionals. Most educators and therapists do not feel that prescription medications should be used to treat dyslexia, and all medications can produce unwanted side effects in some individuals. Talk to your child's regular pediatrician before considering this approach.
