Dyslexia therapy is aimed primarily at treating either the underlying causes of dyslexia or specific skill deficits that are seen as precursors to developing the ability to read and write. It differs from tutoring because the goal is to find ways to enhance your child's ability to learn. Some therapies are based on novel theories as to the causes of dyslexia and some are controversial; however, all the therapies profiled in this chapter are now well established and widely used. These treatments cannot cure dyslexia, but a single program or a combination of approaches may eliminate or minimize many of the symptoms of dyslexia. You will need to carefully evaluate your child's needs and the focus of any treatment program in order to decide which is best for your child.
