Physical Activity
That physical activity is a good outlet for a depressed child has already been explored. But it is also a beneficial preventative to depression. Not only does physical activity activate the chemicals in the brain that makes one feel good, but it also helps individuals express their feelings. How? Exercise is a way to let off steam. When children are feeling agitated, bewildered, and anxious, exercise is an excellent outlet for reducing their discomfort.
Extra Benefits of Exercise
Exercise can also be good for helping a child develop discipline. Activities such as karate, ballet, or yoga demand a tremendous amount of focus. To focus on something positive can actually help a child work through her problems subconsciously and lets her take her mind off of her problems. These types of exercise require that the child place all of her attention on the activity and gives her time off from her worrying. The discipline she develops gives her another coping skill in her arsenal for preventing or fighting depression.
Essential
If your child shows interest in a certain activity, encourage it. You may not understand her interest, but she may actually need this activity. Kids often subconsciously know they need exercise to decrease their negative feelings. Do not assume that this is just a passing fancy. At least let her try and see if she gets anything positive from it.
Exercise as a Confidence Booster
The other advantage of participating in physical activity is that your child will hopefully experience some personal successes. Anything that gives her a sense of mastery and confidence is going to boost her self-esteem. Anything that bolsters her self-image will go a long way toward preventing depression.
A good way to interest an inactive child in physical activity is to get moving yourself. Exercising with your child sets an example for her, and it gives the two of you something to do together. You might even express to her how good physical activity makes you feel and how it helps you to cope with your emotions.
