When a child is depressed, he has insecurities about his condition and his future. To make matters worse, if there are other problems within the family, these can have an effect on him as well. Parents who are at risk for certain mental illnesses and other problems unwittingly put added pressure on a child with depression, or they can cause a typically stable child to become depressed. These parental problems can make the parent unavailable to the child, and for a child with depression, this can lead to feelings of extraordinary loneliness.
