There is a popular image of the lawyer at trial: cool, collected, with a witness always prepared and ready to be called to the witness stand, examining witnesses with a single legal pad or file folder, and always prepared for whatever tactic or argument the other side presents. That image belies the tremendous amount of work that goes into preparing a case for trial and managing the myriad elements of an actual trial. Much of this work is performed by paralegals.
